Former NFL defensive end Aldon Smith has died at the age of 36, according to a statement released by the San Francisco 49ers. No cause of death has been disclosed.
Selected seventh overall in the 2011 NFL Draft by the 49ers, Smith quickly established himself as one of the league’s most dominant young pass rushers. During his four seasons in San Francisco, he helped lead the franchise to three NFC Championship Games and an appearance in Super Bowl XLVII.
Smith made an immediate impact in his rookie season, recording 14 sacks—the second-highest total by a rookie since 1982—and earning a place on the NFL All-Rookie Team. He followed that performance with a Pro Bowl selection and First-Team All-Pro honors in 2012.
Over the course of his career, Smith appeared in 75 regular-season games and also spent time with the Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, and Seattle Seahawks. He retired from professional football in 2023.
Despite his on-field success, Smith’s career was repeatedly interrupted by off-field issues, including multiple arrests and suspensions related to violations of the NFL’s substance abuse policy. He was released by the 49ers in 2015 and later received an indefinite suspension while with the Raiders.
Smith returned to the NFL in 2020 with the Cowboys, starting all 16 games that season before a brief stint with the Seahawks.
